“I think that all of our origin stories are very international. We embody the expe-
riences of the traveled interactions that we possess and who we integrate with,
who we associate with, the places that we go.”

- As told to Amina Daugherty on burnaway.org

Burnaway is excited to present Ato Ribiero’s intricate sculptures, unpacking his intercontinental upbringing in Ghana and the US. His work mines and honors a variety of shared and neglected histories in order to visually speak to a contemporary sense of cultural hybridity. By employing familiar practices — of collecting, joining and refining natural and repurposed materials my wooden kente quilt works, mixed-media installations and prints provide educational opportunities to seek out new points of reference, while preserving layers of African cultural heritage and varying ethnic perspectives. In essence, he invites the viewer to find their place in our common story.
